Country: | CHINA |
Price: | $800 |
A well carved boxwood toggle of a boy standing on a lotus pod. This figure probably represents Liu Hai the benevolent deity who as a child lures a greedy and poisonous toad from a village well with a string of cash. The legend of Liu Hai and the toad have come to mean a sure path to riches. In this case, Liu Hai crouches as a large lotus leaf protects his head and shoulders. There are two words for lotus in Mandarin âHeâ and âLianâ which in turn are synonyms for Love, modesty, uninterrupted, to bind and unison. Consequently the lotus is almost always associated with marriage and happy unions. Instead of a toad Liu Hai is seen with his string of cash lifted above his head while coins spring from his footsteps. The lotus pod is associated with fertility as its pod carries many seeds. The magnificent flower is also an emblem of purity and perseverance because of the fact that it emerges perfectly from muddy water.
