A fruit wood carving of a Pekingese dog with pup crouching on a plantain leaf. The last Empress of China loved these small dogs and had them bred to more closely resemble the Mythical Lion the Protector Guardian and symbol of valor wisdom and rank. The plantain leaf is a symbol of good health. The leaf was often associated with the medical profession and was often used to wrap medicinal herbs for patients to take home. The female Pekingese would protect its young fiercely against all adversity therefore guaranteeing a long and fruitful life for their off spring.
