Japanese wooden figure of a seated Shinjo on a separate rectangular platform in red and black lacquer finish. Shinjo (1442-1495), a buddhist monk, founder of the Shinjo branch of the Tendai-shu sect. Received the posthumous name of Jisetsu-Daishi. An early example. Wear commensurate with age. Late Edo Period, c. 1860.
