Northeast Indian wood stringed musical instrument, sarangi, from the Santal tribal regions of Bihar. The instrument, played with a bow, was used by itinerant musicians, (referred to as Gaine), at weddings, funerals and festive occasions. This sarangi with a high relief figure at the top above a stylized face or mask on the tuning box. The body of the sarangi with a curving form and remnants of the original stretched skin. Late 19th - early 20th century. 31" high on black metal stand x 5.5"wide x 5.5" deep.
