Chinese blanc-de-chine figure of the Kuan Yin or the Goddess of Mercy. The Kuan Yin was revered as the protector of children and healer of the ill and infirm. Her symbol is a flower vase in which a willow branch has been soaked. Chinese herbalists recognized the willow as having pain killing attributes and therefore it is associated with well being. Aspirin is derived from willow bark. The figure is press molded and clear glazed of porcelain. Excellent condition. Early 20th century.
