A Japanese lacquered wood sake container. The black lacquered sake box would have originally been part of a picnic box set, or sageju, and has a small metal spout for pouring the sake. The box would have been at the base of a picnic box set and the indented ring in the sake box would have received stacked lacquer dishes or a stacking food box (jubako) in the set. Circa 19th century.
