Exceptionally large Saneh (architectural panel) from the exterior of a traditional Torajan home (Tongkonan). Constructed of heavy wood planks, the surface carved in low relief with traditional geometric auspicious patterns including the Pa'tangke lumu or "moss branch" motif and seven stylized buffalo heads. The ornamentation was meant to drive away evil influences; however, the buffalo is also a symbol of wealth and prosperity. Heavily weathered with lichen patina. Torajan, South Sulawesi Island.
