"A Crane & Bamboo" six holds screen, Late Muromachi Period. Color on gold paper. This magnificent screen represents a crane, bamboo, flowers, and cloud on gold-leaf background, surrounded by wild roses, lilies, and sasanqua. Originally, this was the left-side screen of a pair, the right side of which is said to have been given to President De Gaulle. On the right-side screen are a crane, a pine tree, and flowers of Spring and Summer. The original composition was meant to depict the flowers of four seasons. The fine linear brush strokes; the simple, yet impressive composition; and brilliant colors help to attribute to a late 16th-century artist of the Tosa School. The screen also reflects several stylistic features of the late 16th century: the small size of the gold leaves used for the background; the cloud patterns on the top and the bottom of the screen reflect a stylistic trend prevalent at the beginning of the 17th century; and the detailed description of the crane, flowers, leaves, and bamboo also suggest the style. Very Fine and rare six-panel screen dating to the late Muromachi period (late 16th early 17th century) Tosa School. Fine condition.
