Tibetan "Gau" box, a portable shrine box. In a pointed arch roof house form. Silver face with copper back. The front with repousse design of a flaming multi pearls on top, eight Buddhist emblems on both sides of the center opening above the mythical garuda (god of time); a pair of snakes coiling up the pillars of the center opening. Tibetan and Himalayan were nomads and they traveled with their clay Buddha image and prayers written on cloth. These were stored together with colored rice and crops inside these boxes for the purpose of good luck, good yield of the year and protection (an amulet). Late 19th Century. *Snakes design were not often found in these boxes.
