A nicely worn button toggle with a figure of an immortal riding a donkey on one side and with a small gourd and iron crutch on the other. The crutch is raised over a âshouâ (long life) pattern. The figure on the donkey is none other than Li Tieguai one of the Eight Immortals. âIron crutch Liâ was known to be an irascible and ill tempered old man but was also benevolent to the poor, sick and needy, whose suffering he alleviates with special medicine from his gourd. He was said to be able to produce a donkey from his magic gourd that he might travel the country side to tend to the needy and sick. Boxwood. Early 20th c.
