Country: | CHINA |

Cluster of mushrooms carved in fruitwood. Mushrooms although commonly seen in toggle art rarely appears in the same form in the classical Chinese arts. This lack of representation presents problems in discerning meaning peasants would gain from carrying mushroom toggles. In his seminal book Substance and Symbol in Chinese Toggles, Schuyler Cammann speculates that as highly sought after addition to an otherwise bland diet mushrooms may have represented a wish for abundant and delicious foods. The Ling chih or sacred fungus also represented a wish for long life. Additionally Cammann speculates that the mushrooms capacity to pop up over night from seemingly barren soil would come to represent a wish for fertility against all odds.
