A pair of Japanese wood carved Koma Inu; protective Lion Dogs. Literally, "Korean Dogs", such figures would have been guardians of a shrine and messengers to the gods. Each of the leonine figures with its head slightly turned and seated on its haunches. One of the dogs with her mouth open, the other (male) with his mouth closed. The nature of one open, the other closed suggest the phrase "Aum", the cyclical breath of the universe. Two figures in such mutual interdependence were believed to perform a perfect union of cooperation and synergism. The massive bodies of carved hinoki with age cracks. Mid Edo, Circa 18th century.
Dimensions: 23" high x 12" wide x 18" deep
